Case file 07 · The drifting stick

Game console repair for cracked screens and joystick drift

Your character walks off on their own. The screen has a crack across the middle. Handheld consoles take a beating, and most of that damage can be fixed.

A narrow brick storefront at night glowing teal and violet. Game controllers hang on a pegboard, an opened console sits on a workbench beside a small old television, and an arcade cabinet stands inside the glass door.

Sound familiar?

  • Joystick drift: movement when nobody is touching the stick
  • A cracked, dead or flickering handheld screen
  • Not sure what's wrong? Describe it and we'll tell you if it can be fixed

How the Dude handles it

  1. Confirm the model

A Switch and a Switch Lite take different parts. We confirm yours first.

  2. Quote and order

You get the price for parts and labor up front. We order quality parts once you say go, and a parts deposit may be needed.

  3. Repair

Sticks and screens replaced with proper tools, then tested in game.

  4. Game on

You get it back calibrated and ready to play.

Before you call

  • Know which console you have (Switch, Switch Lite, or something else)
  • Save your game progress if the console still works
  • Note when the problem started and whether it was dropped

Straight answers

What is joystick drift?

Drift is when the stick registers movement while you aren't touching it, so your character or camera slides around on its own. It comes from wear inside the stick, and the fix is replacing the stick module.

Do you need a deposit?

When a repair needs parts ordered, a deposit may be needed to cover them. We'll tell you up front.
